This Christmas is my third Christmas in Manchester which means I have had ample opportunity to sample the Christmas lunches from a range of restaurants. One benefit from having 2 PhD supervisors and lab groups means at least 2 Christmas lunches out each year! 😉 In Manchester you really are spoiled for choice when it comes to picking a great restaurant! If you’re looking to organise a group dinner with your colleagues or housemates here is a look back at some of my favourites as well as the places I am looking forward to trying this year…
- Albert Square Chop House
Situated on Albert Square the Chop House is the perfect location for a traditional Christmas turkey lunch with the opportunity for a wander around the main market first to make sure you’re feeling especially festive! I would especially recommend this to foreign students and those looking to experience a traditional British Christmas dinner with all the trimmings.

- Grill on the Alley
The Grill on the Alley is one of my favourite, upmarket restaurants in Manchester and their Christmas menu never fails to disappoint! With classy décor and modern takes on traditional Christmas food this is an excellent choice for those wanting to sample the finer side of Manchester.
- East Z East
For those fed up of turkey and traditional Christmas food East Z East offers a wonderful spicy alternative! With a range of gorgeous curries and a large capacity this restaurant is excellent for large parties and those who fancy doing Christmas lunch a little different this year! Situated on the riverside it’s the perfect location for heading to the markets afterwards.
Bakerie in the Northern Quarter is where I’m heading this year and having recently found out that I’m gluten and lactose-free I’m extremely excited to see that Bakerie cater very well for those with dietary requirements. Most of their dishes from the traditional Christmas menu can be adapted so if any of your group have specific requests they can still join in the festivities without feeling left out! The desserts look especially tempting with Spiced Carrot Cake being my choice, can’t wait!
- The Botanist
Based at the bustling top end of Deansgate The Botanist has long been my favourite for al fresco summer dining and the occasional cocktail! The restaurant is themed throughout to look like a greenhouse and the atmosphere is always buzzing! I will also be sampling their Christmas menu this year and know from previous year that the restaurant always looks wonderfully festive so I’m sure this will be perfect for getting in the mood for Christmas! Be sure to stop for a drink when you get tired of Christmas shopping!
