The AU Executive Committee

The Athletic Union (AU) is the umbrella term for the University of Manchester sports teams, competing against other Universities in BUCS (British University and College Sports). The AU consists of 87 teams across 36 sports, separated into 42 different sports clubs and the focus is about representing the University of Manchester in competitive sport.

The Executive Committee head up the Athletic Union and consist of the following posts:

  • Sport Sabbatical Office (SSO)
  • Events Officer
  • BUCS Wednesday Officer
  • Events Based Sports Representative (BUCS)
  • Communications Officer

The roles are elected at the Summer AGM and these blogs aim to give you an insight into what each of the roles entail.

What does the position involve?

The position involves sorting AU social dates and rotas over summer. I liaise with all the clubs to determine their preferred dates, then create a rota for the rest of the year, dealing with problems with the rota throughout the year. Being present at AU every week is a bonus and I occasionally help promote SPORT Manchester through Twitter etc and promote AU Events via social media. I get to organise and promote both AU Ball and Awards Dinner; finding raffle prizes, creating tickets and distributing them to clubs, as well organising entertainment.

Throughout the year I have also attended AU Forums and helped at SPORT Manchester events such as Fresher’s Fair and the welcome talks delivered in September.

What attracted you apply for the position?

Free AU. I wanted to get to know all the clubs better, and learning more about SPORT Manchester. It looks great on your CV and was an opportunity to find out more about how sport at university works. You also get some cool kit.

What have you enjoyed most about being part of the Exec team?

Free AU. Plus you get to work with great people as part of a team! The events can be fun and you get to promote something which is so important to the University. You get to learn so much about sport at university; there are some sports I didn’t even know existed!

What skills do you feel you have developed in this role?

Planning and organising skills as well as team-building. To satisfy all 42 AU clubs when doing rotas is tricky so you have to create the best combination. Also patience because no one replies to emails.

What advice would you have for anyone wanting to apply for your position?

It helps if you know the clubs a bit better when doing rotas, you’ll be able to match what weeks would suit which club and who they would be better to sell with. If you’re organised it’s easy! You don’t have to be the best at your sport, you just have to be organised and dedicated. Plus you get free AU so do it.

Favourite Purple and Proud moment? 

It was a proud moment being voted into Exec last year. Taking over SPORT Manchester Twitter has been a highlight and pushing the Rainbow Pride campaign. The posters I made were fab.
